TWIS – Weeknight Races – New Sails – Learning While Teaching – Spinnaker Training

Weeknight Races

Tuesday Night Shark Races – Pouring raining and lengthy laylines were the theme of the scenes on Tuesday. This was our second race of the year and the wind was super shifty for our hearty team of merry folks. The high light was the addition of our new sail!

Things to work on include a more mathematical approach to starts and wind angles and generating speed of the starting line, both topics I have discussed with Paul and have a plan to dial in.

I crewed on Papillon on Wednesday and even with a new crew, I think we managed first place. I had the spinnaker / foredeck pretty down but still need to work on anticipation and speed in the steps. No tangles or glitches. Also want to speed up the preparation by elimination any wasted walks up and down the deck. To note – set the jib sheets first, then the spi lines. Also think thru where the jib sheet are positioned during the spinnaker jybe.

Thursday night was solo sailing night with the goal to have a good start and to set the spinnaker on all downwind legs. The wind diminished but I did well per the start and the spi. I was the only short handed racers but really nice to get out solo. The bummer part is packing everything up as the sun sets and coming in pretty late.

New Sails

This really deserves a post of it’s own but I am getting sleepy. We got a full new set of sails from Keven at Bay Sails. It’s really cool to get new sails!

Learning While Teaching

I was feeling a bit bummed not getting enough practice time in while spending a lot of time mentoring and going thru spinnaker manoeuvres with my pals. I am really set on harnessing competency for racing offshore by 2025 and I really want to be constantly improving. My epiphany, although I do need to be learning and practicing as well as being with folks who know the science, poetry and workflows better, was that in mentoring, I review what I have learnt and almost see the areas that I need to improve myself, in the participation of other people.

Spinnaker Training & High Wind Sailing

On Saturday we worked on Spinnaker workflow and Sunday we got on in hight winds. Steady 10 knots gusting 20-25. Busted out the new blade jib and had a great time keeping everything under control.
