Just got word that these two boats are going to hit the market and I essentially have first dibs. The Figaro 1 in Toronto did not work out, Bandit Manchout was a dud and Magic Freeman, heading towards Martinique next April, will wind out being a bit out of both time and financial budget. Perhaps we find a away to keep her on the wall at CNTL???

Ideally, I figure out how to have an ocean-worthy boat in Toronto and in Marseille, perhaps in partnership with some cool folks who love to sail and have a good time. I think I’ll make an offer on on of these guys and see what happens. In the meantime, I have the amazing Knee Deep to sail around and I’ll be training with Diane Reid for the LO300 simulation preparation and for the LO300 race.

Power Vessel Operators Card – (Toronto Harbour License)

Tuesday was dedicated to obtaining the Toronto Port required license to allow me to sail around in the Inner and Outer Harbour areas in and around Toronto. The test was pretty straightforward and after a brief lecture, we had a 20-question multiple-choice test and a quick MOB competency test on a small power boat. I was there was more intrigue and insight to share here but that’s it.

Friends Cruise & Race – Thursday Night Shorthanded and/or Beginners Night

We went out for a rare Monday evening cruise with Janice’s friends from Toronto and Marseille. 12 knots of wind gusting 20 so we got out the reefed sail and rocked out the new blade jib. Good times all around.

After taking Tuesday and Wednesday off it was great to hop back on Knee Deep to race in the Shorthanded series. I also discovered that if you register as a beginner you get training from some top folks at the club. I originally choose Shorthanded so as to not win over really new sailors (Albeit a bit presumptuous here for sure) as I have logged a lot of hours and starts for a new new person. Any, enough of this… I was out with Tom sailing duo AND getting some great mentoring from Steve and Tim.

Key points:

  • Really crank the traveller up when beating – notice how it points better but slows down a bit
  • Under spinnaker – keep the pole just a bit under the foot of the sail

I was a bit out of routine and I completely missed understanding where the first mark was and we would up turning downwind way before the proper mark. It was fun sailing with someone else who had experience racing a shark before.
